Leeds United to honour Gary Speed at Brighton clash to mark 10-year anniversary of his passing

Leeds United’s players will wear special warm-up t-shirts and black armbands in tomorrow’s match against Brighton & Hove Albion to mark the 10-year anniversary of Gary Speed’s passing.

Captain Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas have also paid their respects by laying flowers at the Bremner Square at Elland Road today, before the squad make the trip down south to Brighton.

Tomorrow will be exactly ten years to the day that the footballing world received the devastating news of his death and so Leeds, one of his former clubs, will honour him with a special tribute.

Speed began his career as a schoolboy with the Whites and went onto establish himself as a club legend for what he achieved at Elland Road.

He played a key part in the club’s promotion from Division Two in the 1989/90 season, before then helping the club win the final ever Division One title just two years later.

During his nine-year spell at Leeds, he scored 57 goals in 312 appearances, while also forming one of the best midfield quartets of his generation alongside David Batty, Gordan Strachan and Gary McAllister.

In 1996, Speed then left West Yorkshire for Everton, before then going onto play for Newcastle United, Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield United.

He was also an important figure on the international stage too, making 85 appearances for Wales during his playing days.

Upon his retirement, he then took over as the Welsh football team’s manager, a role that he held right up until the day of his passing.
