Leeds United tipped to defy Liverpool opening day fixture and flourish in Premier League

Leeds United are being backed to buck the bookies' trend - and flourish in the Premier League.

Before last season just 56 per cent of promoted teams survived their first season in the Premier League since 1995, when the 38-game season was introduced.

But with Aston Villa surviving and Sheffield United flourishing last season, Marcelo Bielsa's Championship champions are also being tipped to enjoy a successful return to top flight football.

Despite being handed an opening day test at champions Anfield, bookies thepools.com, the country's oldest established football betting platform, make Leeds a long priced 16/5 to finish in the bottom three next season.

West Bromwich Albion are 19/20 and Fulham Evens to go straight back down, with Aston Villa third favourites after last season's near miss at 13/8.

They are followed by Crystal Palace at 2/1 , Newcastle United at 21/10 and Burnley at 14/5 before you get to Sheffield United, Brighton and Leeds all bracketed on 16/5.

Last time Leeds were promoted as champions they finished fourth - and were crowned Premiership champions the season after.

This season they are 150/1 to win back to back titles - ninth in the Premier League betting ahead of established Premier League clubs like Everton and Southampton.

And don't forget, Leicester City were 5,000-1 when they won the title in 2016!
