Leeds United talking points as Ben White return and Illan Meslier absence dominate discussion

The aftermath of Leeds United's 1-0 defeat to Ben White's Brighton and Hove Albion rankles more than most. A game which on paper, United looked set to at the very least compete well in, ended in disappointment and despair for a number of reasons.

A stuttering attack, lapses in defence and concerning absences meant Leeds United supporters had plenty to sink their teeth into post-match, although discussion surrounding a potential relegation threat are still somewhat premature.

With 23 points and already well clear of the drop, Leeds would need to go on a lengthy winless run to be in any trouble at the wrong end of the table.

Brighton on the other hand, ended a nine-game winless streak at Elland Road and it was difficult to argue they did not deserve to do so.

Does no goals in three games worry Bielsa?

Here are five Leeds United talking points from yesterday's 1-0 defeat.

Ben White's return

Deployed in midfield, Ben White's task on his return to Elland Road was carried out manfully and professionally, to much annoyance amongst the Leeds United fanbase. There was nothing but gratitude and admiration for the 23-year-old defender throughout the game and post-match, such was his influence here last season.

White played a role in the game's most decisive moment, progressing the ball through midfield onto Alexis Mac Allister who eventually set up Neal Maupay after a neat, flowing move. The Seagulls shared the same number of shots and shots on target as Leeds, although for much of the second half sat back and capably protected their advantage.

White's versatility meant he was comfortable tucking in from his starting midfield role, in which he performed capably, completing two of his three dribbles and 17 of his 21 attempted passes according to WhoScored.

Meslier absence

The biggest pre-match talking point was Illan Meslier's absence from the squad, despite Marcelo Bielsa's midweek claim that only Kalvin Phillips would be unavailable through suspension.

Bielsa confirmed Meslier's absence was not out of the blue, while the 'keeper posted a message on his Instagram story stating he was recovering well. How long this particular ailment keeps the Frenchman out for remains to be seen, but it is fair to say Leeds United supporters hope his return is a swift one.

Kiko Casilla's performance in Meslier's absence was fine, and a step up from his Crawley showing the previous weekend. That said, Leeds will hope Meslier can make a comeback sooner rather than later.

Expected Goals

Leeds United's xG total against Brighton was the lowest they have recorded in 18 Premier League games this season. According to InfoGol, Leeds' meagre 0.31 was even lower than the 0.33 xG recorded at Anfield on the opening day of the season.

On that occasion, Leeds scored three times, perhaps rather fortunately, but at Elland Road against the Seagulls, Leeds did not look as though they would come close to finding the net.

It is a concern now after three consecutive fixtures without a goal, but Marcelo Bielsa will not be tearing up his tactical plans just yet. Games against Newcastle United and Leicester City will prove a good test of how far Leeds have come since their 5-2 win and 4-1 defeat respectively from earlier in the season.

Mini-league defeat

Defeat to Brighton means it is the first time this season Leeds have been beaten by a side languishing in the bottom five of the table. Previously, Leeds had enjoyed a good record against teams lower in the table, beating Sheffield United, Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle with relative comfort.

The Brighton result means Leeds' relegation mini-league no longer reads as handsomely as it once did. Although, results elsewhere, including defeats for Fulham and Wolves mean Leeds stay in 12th despite their loss, and are not yet in immediate danger of the drop.
