Leeds United tactics surprise Ian Wright as Brighton handed 'easy' task

Ian Wright was surprised by how many long balls Leeds United played in their defeat to Brighton on Saturday.

The Whites had 67 per cent possession against the Seagulls but struggled to properly break their opponents down, with Neal Maupay's 11th-minute goal proving to be the difference between the two sides.

Despite seeing plenty of the ball, Leeds created little, with just two efforts on target.

Speaking on Match of the Day, legendary Premier League striker Wright said it was clear the Whites were missing the presence of Kalvin Phillips in midfield.

He said: "They looked right off it. It didn’t go for them.

Does no goals in three games worry Bielsa?

"I was surprised they didn't play more through their midfield. I know they were without Kalvin Phillips, who is a massive miss for them.

"They went a bit long, it was obvious to me, the midfielders players didn't look to receive the ball, the forwards are looking long.

"The defenders are just trying to go long, which was very surprising.

"Nobody came towards it and it was very easy for Brighton. It was very unusual and easy for Brighton in the end, they did their homework. That type of game for Leeds."

Wright felt Leeds were lacking offensively and played into the hands of Brighton, who were able to exploit the gaps on the counter-attack.

"Leeds were very disappointing from an offensive point of view, as their manager said. Brighton closed Leeds down.

"They set the traps, Ben White had a great game today, alongside Veltman who was brilliant today, Webster was brilliant today.

"They tried to attack the spaces left by Leeds. For the goal, it’s great play, it’s a fantastic move, Ayling loses Maupay at the back stick."
