Leeds United supporters mark annivesary of 'iconic' Luke Ayling goal in last game before lockdown

Leeds United supporters could not hide their excitement as they re-lived Luke Ayling's wonder-strike against Huddersfield Town three years ago to the day in what was the Whites' last game before lockdown.

A 2-0 victory over the Terriers on March 7, 2020 would be the last time Leeds fans saw their side play at Elland Road for over a year as the country went into a national lockdown. However, Ayling ensured that supporters went home with the memory of one of the club's all-time great goals.

The defender rifled home a stunning volley that crashed off the underside of the bar and into the net within three minutes of kick-off. Patrick Bamford would add a second in the 51st minute, yet the striker's goal was eclipsed by Ayling's jaw-dropping effort to open the scoring.

Speaking after the game, the Leeds star admitted that he had already achieved the feat at Thorp Arch in the days prior to the game and decided to try his luck once again.

Ayling said: “I scored exactly the same goal in training yesterday! It just came across and I just thought sod it, I’m going to smash it!"

And although it has now been three years since Ayling nearly ripped a hole in the back of the net, Leeds fans relished in the opportunity to re-live the goal as they took to social media to share their memories and thoughts of the spectacular strike.
