Leeds United suffer Helder Costa injury blow as midfielder stretchered off against Barnsley

Leeds United face a nervous wait over Helder Costa after the winger was stretchered off the pitch during the clash against Barnsley.

The 26-year-old Portugal international started for Leeds as Marcelo Bielsa's side welcomed struggling Barnsley to Elland Road.

After beating Swansea 1-0 on Sunday, Leeds were looking to strengthen their grip on an automatic promotion place after second placed West Brom dropped points against Fulham.

And the Championship leaders made the perfect start after taking the lead in the first half, with Tykes defender Michael Sollbauer turning a cross into his own net.

But early in the second half, Costa received a heavy challenge from Barnsley's Alex Mowatt, which left the winger on the floor.

Despite receiving treatment, the former Wolves star was unable to continue and was eventually stretchered off the pitch, with what appeared to be an injury to his ribs.

Bielsa will hope it isn't a serious problem, ahead of Leeds' remaining two Championship fixtures against Derby and Charlton.

Costa recently completed a permanent move from Wolves worth around £16million, having been on loan from the Premier League side since last summer.

The winger has scored four goals and delivered six assists in 42 appearances this season.
