Leeds United star Wilfried Gnonto on 'proud' moment amid Paolo Di Canio praise

Wilfried Gnonto says it was a 'proud' moment for him and his family to receive praise from Paolo Di Canio. The teenager scored a sensational scissor kick volley in Leeds United's 5-2 win over Cardiff City in the FA Cup third round in January.

His strike received comparisons to Di Canio's sublime volley against Wimbledon in 2000, and the former West Ham United forward messaged Gnonto to offer his congratulations following his impressive start in the Premier League.

Gnonto told BBC Sport that Di Canio's goal was better than his, and admired the kind words he received from a 'legend' of the game.

"No I think Di Canio's was better," Gnonto smiled. "He is a legend. I didn't expect it. He was really nice. He was like, 'I'm really happy for what you're doing. Keep going and stuff like this'.

"It made me really proud. When I was younger I used to watch all his videos, and I was like 'wow'. Getting praise from him was something incredible for me and for my family.

"He said I have to stop scoring goals like this because they keep messaging him."
