Leeds United star's agent rubbishes release clause claims amid Manchester United interest

Any rumoured details of a release clause for Kalvin Phillips within his current Leeds United contract are rubbish, according to the player's agent following speculation over interest from Manchester United.

The midfielder, who has emerged as the key cog in the engine room of Marcelo Bielsa's Elland Road revolution over the past two seasons, has been previously linked with a move to several big-name sides following his superb form in West Yorkshire.

The Whites currently sit second in the Championship, but several of their stars may be snapped up by Premier League clubs if they fail to achieve promotion following their near-miss last term.

Reports emerged following United's win over Bristol City at the weekend that Phillips - recently returned from a three-game ban - had a specific trigger in his current deal that would allow him to be released from his hometown club.

Michael Brown told Football Insider that such a clause was added when the 24-year-old signed an extended contract earlier this season, but now, agent Kevin Sharp has dismissed such speculation as idle nonsense.

"[It's] not true, and certainly no-one knows any detailed clauses within any of my players' contracts," he wrote in response on Twitter.

Phillips is unlikely to remain with United if Bielsa is unable to steer them back to the Premier League the second time around however, with the Yorkshireman having been tipped for England honours if his current form continues.

Leeds next face mid-table Reading in the Championship this weekend as they continue to chase an automatic promotion berth and avoid the play-off race beneath them.
