Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips handed first England call-up ahead of Nations League fixtures

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has been named in Gareth Southgate's England squad for the very first time for their upcoming Uefa Nations League fixtures.

The Whites academy graduate has been named in Southgate's squad alongside some of English football's household names for next month's tussles with Iceland and Denmark.

The Three Lions, who reached the finals of the very first Uefa Nations League in the summer of 2019, before being beaten by the Netherlands at the semi-final stage, will face Iceland away from home on Saturday, September 5 before making the trip to Copenhagen to face Denmark on Tuesday, September 8.

It is a landmark achievement for the Whites midfield enforcer, who had established himself as one of the best players outside of the Premier League over the last couple of seasons.

Now, the Leeds academy graduate will get the chance to work alongside some of the most experienced names the Premier League has to offer, including captain Harry Kane.

Phillips had previously reiteriated his desire to one day pull on an England shirt and now he has been handed that opportunity by Southgate, who did visit Elland Road on occasions last season to asses his performance-levels.

And back in June, Southgate hinted at the prospect of Phillips soon being handed a call-up, something which Phillips admitted would be a dream come true.

Phillips said: "I think I caught it. I just read the little bit when my name was mentioned. I think he mentioned that the coronavirus period could be a good thing for us as we could be, eventually, involved.

"That would be massive for me. I have always wanted to play for England and I have always wanted to be recognised by somebody at international level.

"It is the same with Ben, he is a great player. He has done very well, obviously not playing in the Championship before, and he has come in and done exceptionally well.

"I think, especially if he keeps working hard, he has a very bright future ahead of him."
