Leeds United star Joe Gelhardt's future just became clearer as Swansea City's transfer interest explained

Swansea City remain eager to bolster their forward options with just shy of a fortnight remaining in the January transfer window.

The Swans are yet to add to their squad this month, despite seeing Armstrong Oko-Flex, Fin Stevens, Jordon Garrick, Nathanael Ogbeta and Brandon Cooper all leave the club.

Michael Obafemi, Jamie Paterson and Morgan Whittaker are among those who could depart before the 11pm deadline on January 31, meaning Russell Martin's squad will be somewhat thin without new recruits.

Rotherham United's Chiedozie Ogbene and Leeds United's Joe Gelhardt both feature on Swansea's transfer wish list, and the picture on the latter appears to have become clearer this week.

Only one of the 20-year-old's 15 Premier League appearances this season have been as a starter while he was listed among the substitutes for Leeds' 5-2 hammering of Cardiff City in an FA Cup third-round replay at Elland Road on Wednesday night having started the original tie in south Wales.

Patrick Bamford starred with a brace against the Bluebirds as he continues to return to full match fitness, although it was Wilfried Gnonto who stole the headlines with his own pair of strikes.

Combined with the £35m capture of Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim, it all leaves Gelhardt in a precarious position in west Yorkshire, and a loan exit now appears likely for the Liverpool-born frontman following a period of uncertainty over his short-term future.

Swansea are admirers of the striker and believe they would be among the most attractive options when it comes to potentially securing the services of Gelhardt on a short-term deal.

Wages are a huge factor though, with Swansea keen to recruit players on a permanent basis as opposed to spending hefty sums to fund a deal for someone who will only spend a few months at the club.

That said, should Whittaker and Obafemi depart, the Swans will be in desperate need of frontline additions given that Liam Cullen and Joel Piroe have been deployed as a pair of late.

Swansea's transfer window is likely to spark into life once the first significant sale is concerned, with Rangers firmly interested in Whittaker while Burnley have had bids for Obafemi rejected.

However, Gelhardt has plenty of interest, with former club Wigan Athletic among those desperate to strike a deal with Leeds.

But the prospect of a Championship club landing Gelhardt appears to have been significantly boosted this week given the situation that has unfolded with Jesse Marsch's side. It remains one to keep an eye on.
