Leeds United showing signs of unexpected progress on Marcelo Bielsa's biggest concern

Leeds United's recent run of form has been hugely positive, losing just once in the last seven games.

The Whites have also maintained an unbeaten home record against the so-called 'Big Six' clubs in the Premier League this season, securing five draws and a win.

Tottenham Hotspur were the latest arrival at Elland Road sent packing rather glumly, much like Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool before them, but unlike Arsenal and Manchester City.

The Gunners and the champions-elect were fortunate not to have suffered a similar fate to Spurs, who went down 3-1 on Saturday afternoon, a game which was punctuated by a spring downpour.

In the first half of the season though, Leeds allowed a deluge of goals, giving up numerous shots almost every game.

Now, with continuity at the back; Pascal Struijk and Diego Llorente striking up something of a partnership together, Leeds have shored up defensively.

As shown in the Spurs display though, this has hardly hindered their attacking aggression.

Looking at the wider picture, Leeds have faced 16 teams home and away this season, with just Southampton, Burnley and West Brom still to play.

Following the victory against Spurs, Leeds have improved on the result from their first meetings with Liverpool, Manchester City, Leicester, Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Manchester United and Spurs.

They have also completed doubles over Newcastle, Fulham and Sheffield United.

A few recent examples show the progress Leeds have made:

20 Dec' 2020: Manchester United 6-2 Leeds United

25 Apr' 2021: Leeds United 0-0 Manchester United

16 Jan' 2021: Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 Leeds United

08 May 2021: Leeds United 3-1 Tottenham Hotspur

12 Sep' 2020: Liverpool 4-3 Leeds United

19 Apr' 2021: Leeds United 1-1 Liverpool

03 Oct' 2020: Leeds United 1-1 Manchester City

10 Apr' 2021: Manchester City 1-2 Leeds United

Marcelo Bielsa spoke ahead of the 1-1 draw with Liverpool last month about Leeds' ability to match teams on the pitch with greater resources off it.

The Argentine was candid that such contests were not played out as equals, due to the immense inequalities between Leeds and the 'Big Six'.

"We haven't been able to play as equals against the traditional top six of the Premier League. To anticipate when this will happen is not prudent. These types of things, more than announcing them, you have to demonstrate them and up until now we haven't managed it," Bielsa said.

If Bielsa had hoped for improvements on the first half of the season, then now he has them in black and white, and sooner than expected.

Leeds' results have largely been more positive against teams the second time around.

The regularity of this suggests it is more than mere coincidence. Clearly, the analysis and coaching departments at Thorp Arch have aligned rather well in dissecting negative results from the first half of the campaign, and applying the lessons learned to training and preparation for the return fixture.
