Leeds United set to win race for Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah - report

It's not the news that Bristol City fans want to hear as we enter the final 24 hours of the transfer window.

Leeds United are reported as being highly likely to win the race for Arsenal talent Eddie Nketiah.

The 20-year-old is expected to join the Sky Bet Championship club on loan for the season, according to the Press Association.

He will be a replacement for Kemar Roofe who joined Anderlecht for an undisclosed fee on Tuesday.

The PA say that: 'Bristol City were interested in Nketiah and had been front runners last month before Unai Emery felt the striker would stay at the Emirates Stadium this term.'

It is now believed that the Gunners have decided to let the forward leave, despite impressive pre-season performances, ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline with the London club confident that they have cover in the forward positions.

It is believed that Leeds United director of football Victor Orta played a big part in swaying the loan decision.

Orta is said to have a good relationship with Emery and the PA understands that he made a personal pitch to Arsenal for Nketiah on Tuesday.

City did all they can to get him, having tracked the striker for more than a year and made Arsenal well aware of the positive environment Nketiah would work in, plus offering a solid financial package including a large loan fee.

But it appears Victor Orta’s personal relationship with Unai Emery and the presence of Marcelo Bielsa seems to have ensured Leeds won the race. Although nothing is sealed as of yet and is unlikely to be tonight, and a small chance of success yet remains.

The England Under-21 international has made 19 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners and has scored three times since making his debut in the Europa League clash against BATE Borisov in 2017.
