Leeds United set to launch bid for former Bristol City star as they step up chase for winger

Leeds United look set to make a move for Luke Freeman.

London Football News claim that Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa is keen to snap up the QPR playmaker after an impressive couple of years at Loftus Road.

Freeman spent three years at Bristol City between 2014 and 2017, scoring 10 goals in 105 appearances before switching to the West London club.

He now could be on the move again, although QPR would not want to lose the former Robin cheaply after he was their player of the year and extended his contract last season.

Leeds are keen on a winger and have also been linked with a move for the Robins' own Callum O'Dowda.

They were linked with both O'Dowda and Freeman in January but opted instead to bid for Daniel James from Swansea City in a move that fell through in the latter stages of transfer deadline day.

There is a certain irony in Leeds wanting both players, with Irish winger O'Dowda's contract situation mirroring that of Freeman's when he was at Ashton Gate.

O'Dowda has a year left to run on his current contract and, with it looking unlikely that he will sign a new deal, he will likely leave the Robins this season.

In January 2017, Freeman was coming to the end of his contract and departed for QPR after some good form.

Robins boss Lee Johnson revealed that Freeman turned down a new contract offer, but, speaking 12 months later, the player claimed it was out of his hands.

"To be perfectly honest, it was out of my hands," said the former Arsenal youngster. "The club didn’t really offer me anything and it was coming to the end of my contract so I needed a club.

""I was waiting over eight months for a contract that was so-called going to be offered to me.

"When they did it was really nowhere near what anyone else was on.

"So it was out of my hands. I probably wouldn’t have left if they had offered me the contract they said they were going to offer me earlier.

""It was one of those where I had to leave because there wasn’t anything on the table for me.

"It was out of my hands – if I had had it my way I would probably have still been there but that’s football. These things happen. You have to move on and do what you can."

He still retains close links to a number of his old Robins teammates, having invited them to his wedding earlier this month.
