Leeds United set to be officiated by referee at centre of VAR red card controversy

Here is the Leeds United morning digest on Wednesday 28th April 2021.

Kavanagh sees red card overturned but remains posted

Premier League referee Chris Kavanagh has seen his decision to send off West Ham defender Fabian Balbuena overturned after the London club were successful with an appeal.

Balbuena was deemed to have fouled Chelsea's Ben Chilwell as he cleared the ball during the London derby last weekend.

After consulting the pitchside monitor, Kavanagh decided a red card was the correct course of action, which has now been overruled.

Despite this, the referee is still set to take charge of Leeds United's game with Brighton and Hove Albion this weekend.

Liam Cooper had plenty to say on the Balbuena sending off, just weeks after he was penalised and handed a three-match suspension for a tackle on Gabriel Jesus.

EURO 2020 lifeline handed down to Leeds United trio

UEFA has announced that squads will be permitted to contain 26 players at this summer's European Championships, opening the door for potential additional Leeds United representation.

It is widely anticipated that Kalvin Phillips will be amongst England's squad for this summer's tournament, however Patrick Bamford and Luke Ayling remain on the fringes of the England selection picture.

Gareth Southgate name-checked both players when divulging the reasoning for his most recent squad, and pays regular visits to Elland Road so is well-aware of the quality Bamford and Ayling offer.

An additional three squad places allows Southgate the opportunity to call up players deserving of an international summer who would ordinarily have missed out.

On the continent, Pascal Struijk could benefit in the same manner, and will have Belgium or the Netherlands to choose from.

Recap what Belgium boss Roberto Martinez said previously about the 21-year-old's chances of a call-up.

Shearer hails Struijk

Former Newcastle United striker turned mainstream pundit Alan Shearer has praised Pascal Struijk for Leeds' clean sheet against Man United at the weekend.

Speaking to the Premier League's official website, as quoted by The Boot Room, Shearer commended Struijk's passing and solidity.

“He was solid and reliable and his passing was superb as Leeds United picked up another point against one of the big boys.”

Shearer nominated the Dutchman and England's Kalvin Phillips in his Premier League Team of the Week for their part in the stalemate at Elland Road.
