Leeds United sent Junior Firpo transfer verdict after Max Wober signing

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson reckons Junior Firpo's days at Elland Road could be numbered following the arrival of Maximilian Wober from Red Bull Salzburg.

The Whites signed Austrian international Wober, who can play at left-back, earlier this week from Salzburg.

The 23-year-old defender is the third player to join Leeds from the Austrian club since Jesse Marsch's arrival with Wober linking back up with former teammates Rasmus Kristensen and Brenden Aaronson.

And Wober's arrival could signal the end of Firpo's Leeds career, which looks to have stalled.

The 26-year-old left-back, who signed for the Whites back in 2021 from Barcelona for £15m, has made just three first team appearances his season due to injuries and the form of makeshift full-back Pascal Struijk.

Even when fit, Marsch has made it clear he prefers Struijk over Firpo based on his team selections this season. Despite it not being his favoured position, Struijk has performed reasonable well at left-back.

And former Leeds goalkeeper Robinson believes it may be in the Whites best interests to cut their losses when it comes to Firpo in January if they receive a reasonable bid for the defender.

"Firpo doesn’t look like he’ll be a squad player. I think if the opportunity to move him along comes, he’ll go," Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

"The manager’s got to be given time. If he’s the man and he’s the one that they want, as with other clubs, you can see the greatest gift you can give a manager is time.

"You’ve got to allow him to build a squad and build his team to do what he wants them to do. If Junior Firpo isn’t a part of that, and he’s seemingly not, then that’s part of football that happens and he’ll move on.

"Players have been victims of that before so he’s not the first and he won’t be the last.

"I don’t think his performances have warranted an opportunity to play in the team. He’s been too inconsistent defensively and he’s not strong enough offensively. It’s a case of Leeds cutting their losses and if he moves on in January and get a move, that’s for the best."
