Leeds United sent financial message after missing out on potential cash injection

Retaining their place in the Premier League this season may be a priority but Leeds United have been reminded not to forget other competitions.

Leeds are looking to consolidate their position in the top flight following promotion from the Championship last term.

Marcelo Bielsa's side currently sit 12th in the table - a comfortable 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

But they saw their FA Cup campaign ended at the first hurdle as they suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat to League Two side Crawley Town in the third round of the competition.

Bielsa on the Crawley defeat

The Whites have a poor recent record in the FA Cup and Bielsa is yet to win a tie in his three seasons at Elland Road.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire says Leeds are a club who could profit greatly from a decent cup run - or European qualification.

Prize money is not a major factor in the grand scheme of things but merchandising and gate receipts - when fans are allowed back at matches - can provide a big financial boost.

“(A cup run) would be big but it wouldn’t hit the radar significantly from a straightforward financial perspective," Maguire told Football Insider.

“You get £1.8million for winning the FA Cup this year, that’s the difference between finishing 12th and 11th in the Premier League.

"The prizes for the FA Cup this season have been halved by the Football Association as a result of Covid, so that’s put a further financial damper on it.

“What would have been good for Leeds is, if they got to the final and we were allowed to watch it, the club would have made an awful lot of money from merchandise, and clearly they would have sold out every ticket.

"If off the back of that they could have got into Europe… It’s 17 or 18 years since Leeds were last in Europe.

“Even in the Europa League, I would have anticipated that Leeds would have sold out Elland Road every match at home and they would take huge away followings as well.”

Leeds are not back in Premier League action until Tuesday January 26, when they travel to Newcastle United (6pm kick-off).
