Leeds United send Sol Bamba message of support after former skipper is diagnosed with cancer

Leeds United have sent a message of support to their former captain Sol Bamba after it was announced that he has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Bamba's current club Cardiff City confirmed in a statement that the defender, who turns 36 on Wednesday, has begun a course of chemotherapy treatment and is in 'typically positive spirits' as he begins his fight against the disease.

"The thoughts and best wishes of everyone at Leeds United are with Sol Bamba," the Whites tweeted on Monday evening. "Get well soon, the Leeds family is right behind you! #MOT".

Whites defender Luke Ayling responded to Leeds' tweet of support with the message: "One of the nicest men you will ever meet. You got this big man."

Bamba spent a season-and-a-half at Elland Road, initially joining on loan in January 2015 and was appointed captain prior to the 2015-16 campaign. After falling down the pecking order under Garry Monk, he left the club in September 2016 and joined Cardiff City.

During his four-and-a-half years in South Wales he has become a fan favourite and the club issued a statement updating supporters on Bamba's condition.

"We are saddened to inform supporters that Sol Bamba has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma," the club said.

"With the close support of the Club's medical team, Sol has immediately started a course of chemotherapy treatment.

"Universally admired by teammates, staff and supporters in the Welsh capital, Sol has begun his battle in typically positive spirits and will continue to be an integral part of the Bluebirds family. During treatment, Sol will support his teammates at matches and our younger players within the Academy, with whom he will continue his coaching development.

"All future updates on Sol’s progress will be provided only via official Club channels. While we request privacy for him and his family at this time, messages of support to be passed on to Sol may be sent to club@cardiffcityfc.co.uk.

"We are all with you, Sol."

Bamba has not featured for the Bluebirds since he was a unused substitute against Norwich City on December 19.

Get well soon, Sol.
