Leeds United saw second highest number of fan arrests in England last season

Leeds United had the second-highest number of fans arrested last season.

New Home Office figures published today reveals there were 49 arrests made in the 2018/19 season. That was up from 39 arrests the year before.

The 49 arrests made last season was the second-highest seen across all football clubs, as only Stoke City had more (80).

15 of the Leeds United arrests were because of pitch invasions, 12 were for alcohol offences and another 12 were for committing public disorder.

There were six arrests made for violent disorder, three for throwing missiles and one for a breach of a banning order.

However, the figures don’t reveal how many of the arrests resulted in charges or how many eventually went to court.

It comes after three men, who are believed to be Leeds fans, were arrested following a brawl in the stands at Oakwell stadium, during Leeds' 2-0 win over Barnsley on Sunday.

In more positive news, just two fans were slapped with a banning order in 2018/19. That is the lowest number of new bans the club has seen since records began in 2014/15.

For the first time ever, the Home Office has provided the ages of those issued with a ban, and both were handed to fans aged between 18 and 34.

People with banning orders aren’t allowed to attend any regulated matches in the UK and may have to surrender their passport to police before matches overseas.

The orders are issued following a conviction for a football-related offence or following a complaint by a local police force, the British Transport Police, or the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

The bans usually last between three and five years.

It means that, as of last season, there were 26 banning orders in place for Leeds United fans - the lowest number on modern record.

Nationally, there were 549 new banning orders issued across football clubs in 2018/19.

That was up from 460 the year before and marks the highest number since comparable records began in 2014/15.

The overall number of arrests, however, fell to a record low - at 1,307.
