Leeds United's Weston McKennie issues statement following controversial social media comments

Weston McKennie has taken to social media to dissociate himself from controversial comments made on the morning of Leeds United’s clash with Leicester City. The midfielder played the full 90 minutes for the Whites as they were held to a 1-1 draw by the Foxes at Elland Road, a result that keeps them in the mire at the foot of the Premier League.

However, a series of remarks made on a Twitter Space by an account which claims to be a friend of McKennie’s have come under scrutiny after the contest. The account in question suggested the midfielder made a mistake joining Leeds in January and took aim at the level of the team.

Since McKennie’s arrival at Elland Road, the individual has been prominent on social media and Leeds United fans have been seen interacting regularly with him. McKennie, though, felt the need to issue a statement on Instagram on Wednesday morning after the comments made by his purported associate on Tuesday night.

“I just wanted to clarify that things said yesterday have not come from me,” he wrote. “When people you know look to defend you, they generally do it from a place of love but if I have something I want to say it will come directly from me.

“As always the support in Elland Road yesterday was amazing. Let’s fight together for the next 5 games and keep this club where it belongs.”

McKennie has come in for large amounts of criticism for his performances since joining the Whites from Juventus in the closing days of the January window, but he looks set to play a key role over the next month as Leeds battle to stay in the Premier League and turned in an improved performance against the Foxes. The American's loan move includes an option for United to make the deal permanent, which is expected to be activated should the club secure survival.
