Leeds United's unexpected Luke Ayling back-up is finally getting pitch time

Lincoln City boss Michael Appleton has praised Robbie Gotts after his performance on his full debut for the club against Portsmouth in midweek.

The 20-year-old moved to the League One side on loan last month, but has had to wait for his chance with the Imps due to their solid form.

He made his first start for the club against Portsmouth, where the hosts suffered a 3-1 defeat, and played in a full-back role for the club.

It was a stern test for Gotts, who was replaced shortly after the hour mark, but he impressed Appleton with his display despite the difficulties he faced.

“I thought Robbie did well in the first half, I thought he was good. It got difficult for him in that second half, but he’s going to be fine for us," he told LincolnshireLive.

“He’s got lots of energy and I’m sure we’ll see more and more of him, and the better side of him, going forward. I think the kid sees himself as a midfield player, but he’s certainly played enough times at full-back.”

Gotts will now be pushing to earn a start in the FA Cup first-round this weekend against Forest Green and will aim to cement more regular opportunities with the club.

That competition will hold fond memories after he made his first-team debut for Leeds in January against Arsenal in the FA Cup third round at the Emirates Stadium.

Capable of playing in central midfield or at right-back, his versatility could be a useful asset for both Lincoln and Leeds moving forward.
