Leeds United's transfer stance on Man Utd's Dan James, why Bielsa has kept monitoring him and the likelihood of a deal

Manchester United's Daniel James has been the subject of much transfer talk this summer.

His debut season at Old Trafford burned brightly at the beginning but the flame slowly fizzled out as the campaign drew to its conclusion.

It was quite the opposite the season before, of course, when he caught fire at the end of the season with Swansea City, a run of form which earned him the £15million switch to United.

But that all came after a failed move to Leeds United in the January of 2019.

It is no surprise, then, that once talk of a potential Old Trafford exit came about, it was Marcelo Bielsa's side who were heavily linked with another move for the Wales international.

So, what is Leeds' stance on the matter? And what is the likelihood of any deal coming to fruition? We asked the man in the know...

Leeds United correspondent Beren Cross, who writes for WalesOnline's sister title LeedsLive, said: "Daniel James has cropped up in another transfer window alongside Leeds United’s name.

"Marcelo Bielsa and Victor Orta had him at Elland Road, pictured with the shirt, on January deadline day 2019.

"Bielsa does not suddenly stop rating a footballer because they moved on elsewhere. He will have continued to watch James at Old Trafford.

"The links with Ryan Kent, another of Bielsa’s long-term favourites, underline the interest in a winger and James fits into that category.

"It’s more complicated, though. James is still a part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans and he is on more money than Kent.

"A deal for James looks distinctly unlikely as it stands because he remains needed by the Red Devils.

"Diego Llorente, a centre-back, will be the next player through the door at Elland Road which would leave a vacancy for a playmaker-cum-winger.

"If something changes before the deadline, then Leeds will keep their options open on swooping for James, but Rodrigo De Paul remains the main name being linked to LS11."
