Leeds United's transfer policy is standing out from the crowd as January arrives

Andy Reid believes Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa deserves a lot of credit for improving the players he inherited at the club.

The Whites currently sit top of the Championship table after an impressive first half of the campaign which saw Bielsa’s side hit the ground running.

Leeds were beaten in last season’s play-offs by Derby County at the semi-final stage in Bielsa’s first season in charge of the Elland Road club.

Reid believes the iconic boss deserves praise for coming into the club and opting to improve the players they had rather than spend millions in the transfer market.

“The thing with Leeds is that they haven’t really bought anyone as such since he came in,” the former Republic of Ireland international told BBC Radio 5Live.

“He’s improved them as individual players, but more importantly he has improved them as a team.

“So they are playing as a good team because of coaching, because of what he has worked on on the training pitch.

“Which is the sign of a really good coach. Because I think too many times now you get coaches and they go into a new club and all they want to do is spend money and bring in new players.

“I think the art of coaching is getting a little bit forgotten.”
