Leeds United's transfer hopes dashed after Frank Lampard's arrival at Chelsea - reports

Leeds United's hopes of picking up a highly-rated England U21 international have reportedly been dashed following Frank Lampard's appointment as manager at Chelsea.

The Whites had been rumoured to be interested in securing the services of Jake Clarke-Salter, who captain his country earlier this summer at the European Championship.

However, with the arrival of the former Derby County manager at Stamford Bridge, hopes of bringing the 21-year-old to Elland Road are thought to have fizzled out given the frosty relationship between the 41-year-old and United, as reported by WalesOnline.

The ex-Chelsea and England midfielder made the move into coaching last season, taking the Reins at Pride Park and guiding them to the play-off final in his first season in charge.

However, his period in charge of the club was characterised by a fiery, antagonistic relationship with Leeds, one which intensified following the Spygate saga in which Marcelo Bielsa accused of covert surveillance on Country training sessions ahead of their second encounter of the season.

Leeds triumphed in three of four meetings with Derby last campaign but ultimately lost their last and most important clash, in a 4-2 defeat at Elland Road in the play-off semi-finals to send the Rams to Wembley.

Lampard subsequently returned to his former club to replace the outgoing Maurizio Sarri, where Clarke-Salter is currently contracted.

The defender spent last season on loan with Vitesse in the Netherlands and his parent club have since confirmed that they are open to sending him out on a temporary basis again in 2019-20.

Leeds have already made a host of loan signings this season, with Helder Costa among the new faces joining returning loanee Jack Harrison and former Whites fan Jack Clarke, who returns immediately following his permanent move to Tottenham.
