Leeds United's stance on Gaetano Berardi's future amid contract situation

Leeds are open to handing Gaetano Berardi a new deal at Elland Road.

Berardi’s current contract expires in the summer and the club have yet to offer the defender new terms.

Leeds have not ruled out keeping Berardi at Elland Road beyond next summer and will leave the final decision to the Swiss.

Berardi, 31, who is in his seventh season with Leeds, has not been a regular under Marcelo Bielsa and he has made just four starts, including two in the Championship.

He may prefer to leave on a Bosman to improve his chances of playing more often.

The centre-half is popular in the dressing room and Leeds’ hierarchy would like him to stay because of his experience.

They successfully appealed against his sending off at Millwall, when he was wrongly dismissed for bringing down Tom Bradshaw for a penalty, and feel he still has a role to play.

Leeds are keen to tie down their key players with new deals and skipper Liam Cooper, Kalvin Phillips, Stuart Dallas and Luke Ayling have all agreed terms in recent weeks.

Leeds hope to tie down Poland midfielder Mateusz Klich next and are committed to retaining the nucleus of Bielsa’s side.

They also want to hang on to on-loan Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah, who has four goals from his nine appearances, even though he has yet to start in the Championship.

All seven of Nketiah’s league appearances have come off the bench and Leeds are confident Arsenal will not recall him in January because he is developing under Bielsa.
