Leeds United's promotion rivals Nottingham Forest linked with £15m Premier League striker swoop

Nottingham Forest are reportedly looking to conclude a deal to land Dwight Gayle from Newcastle United to provide a boost in their promotion battle with Leeds United.

Reports at Mail Online suggest Forest are set to make a loan offer for the 29-year-old, with a follow-up obligation to buy for £15m if they go on to land promotion this season.

As things stand, they are currently four points behind Leeds United at the Championship summit and just two shy of second-placed West Bromwich Albion.

However, following these reports, The Athletic suggests a move for Gayle remains unlikely at this stage, certainly to the City Ground.

Gayle scored 24 goals for West Brom last season, but he remains sidelined with a hamstring injury as attentions remain fixed on transfer deadline day.

Newcastle have barely used Gayle his term, despite ongoing problems in finding the back of the net, with only three top-flight clubs scoring fewer goals than the Magpies this term.

With a late push for Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud also being mooted on Tyneside, it could leave the door open for Gayle to return to the Championship ahead of the 11pm cut-off on Friday evening.

However, with upwards of 48 hours left for clubs to do business, the former Crystal Palace man, who is out of contract next summer, could yet be the subject of further late interest.
