When Leeds United could clinch promotion to the Premier League after victory over Barnsley

Leeds United's hopes of sealing promotion back to the Premier League inched ever closer after a 1-0 win over Barnsley.

A first half own goal from Barnsley defender Michael Sollbauer was enough for all three points in what was a cagey affair at Elland Road.

Nevertheless, Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa will be delighted with a win which means his side only require a point to be mathematically promoted to the top flight.

Leeds are now on 87 points, five clear of second placed West Brom and six ahead of third-placed Brentford.

Brentford recorded an eighth successive win on Wednesday evening against Preston North End.

Ollie Watkins bagged the only goal of the game after just four minutes to move themselves to within just one point of the automatic promotion places.

Though the Bees are now just one point behind West Brom, who have drawn each of their last two outings, they are now six points behind Leeds, meaning that the Whites' destiny remains in their own hands.

Anything less than a win for West Brom on Friday when they travel to Huddersfield would see Leeds promoted back to the Premier League on Friday, leaving the Baggies and Brentford to fight it out themselves for the remaining automatic promotion spot.

If West Brom win at Huddersfield, Brentford would have to win away at Stoke City on Saturday. Anything less than three points for the Bees would also see the Whites promoted before Sunday's clash with Derby County.

The bottom line is, though, that Leeds require just a point from their remaining two fixtures to go up, regardless of what West Brom and Brentford do.

The Whites' destiny is purely in their own hands, but in the best possible scenario the champagne could be popped on Friday evening.
