Leeds United's promotion bid will boil down to one moment if it comes off

If Leeds United do go on to the Premier League at the end of this season, the future will ask those who were there when it was clinched.

Not when the final points needed to get over the line were clinched, or when a man in the EFL boardroom made it so, but when the tide turned, when did the belief hit home.

Two wins from 11 matches across two months sapped all the hope out of just about everyone. United were still in the top two, but nobody knew how.

It was that 11th match without a win which is most important though. Three days after another demoralising defeat to Nottingham Forest, there was a visit to flying Brentford.

Few gave the visitors a chance in light of the teams contrasting form books. It was the night the Whites made their stand and made it clear they would not fade into the West London night.

Even after another Kiko Casilla error heads did not drop and when judgement day comes for 2019/20, we may look back on Liam Cooper’s scruffy equaliser at Griffin Park as the moment everyone believed again.

Mateusz Klich has lifted the lid on what went on behind the scenes, in the dressing room heading into that match with the Bees.

“The Brentford game [was the turning point for the season],” he said.

“After the Nottingham Forest game, we said 'that's enough' and from the Brentford game we need to play better and the Brentford game was perfect for us.

“We could have won and we should have won. After that we showed we are really strong and we can do it, but something's (coronavirus lockdown) in our way now.”
