Leeds United's Pascal Struijk must complete paperwork before making decision on his future

Pascal Struijk needs more time to make a final decision on his international future, according to his agent.

Struijk was born in Belgium before moving to the Netherlands at an early age.

The 21-year-old has previously represented Holland at youth level but remains eligible to play for the country of his birth.

Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has expressed an interest in calling up Struijk, though recently suggested the defender was leaning towards pledging his allegiance to the Dutch.

"It seems that Struijk's heart has tilted towards the Netherlands," Martinez was quoted as saying.

"You have to have respect for that, even if his profile is interesting. I do not want to create a war between federations. He will therefore not be in my selection."

But Martinez added: "This does not mean that the Struijk file is closed."

Now De Telegraaf are reporting that Struijk has asked for time to think after being offered the chance to play for Holland at the upcoming European Under-21 Championship.

The group stage of the tournament takes place between March 24 and March 31, in Hungary and Slovenia.

Meanwhile, Belgium are due to kick off their World Cup qualifying campaign in the same period, with fixtures against Wales, Czech Republic and Belarus.

Struijk's agent Tim Vrouwe of Forza Sports Group told De Telegraaf: “Pascal needs more time to make a good choice.

“This is not easy for various reasons. He is absolutely flattered by the invitation of the Jong Oranje (Holland U21s).

"But if he takes action for this, he can no longer come out for Belgium. The top team of one of these superpowers is the main goal for Pascal.

“The moment we have completed the Belgian passport procedure, he can assess the sporting plan of both unions. And only then can he really make a final choice."

Struijk joined Leeds from Ajax in 2019. This season, he has made 19 appearances for Marcelo Bielsa's side, including 17 in the Premier League.
