Leeds United's Mateusz Klich makes VAR point for Xhaka's stamp on Raphinha in Arsenal defeat

Mateusz Klich has criticised VAR’s lack of input in Leeds United 4-1 defeat against Arsenal.

An injury-depleted Whites side were well beaten by the Gunners but there was one decision that was deemed contentious in the second half.

With Mikel Arteta’s men three goals to the good at Elland Road, Granit Xhaka escaped punishment for an aggressive stamp on Raphinha.

It hadn’t looked like a particularly nasty challenge on first viewing but the replays showed that there was certainly malicious intent from the so-often rash Swiss midfielder.

VAR didn’t feel as though it was an incident worthy of being overruled to the bafflement of plenty of Leeds supporters.

Raphinha’s team mates also clearly thought it was a challenge worthy of a dismissal and Klich has reinforced his views the day after the defeat.

On his Instagram story, the Whites midfielder alluded to the lack of input from Stockley Park by posting a clip of the incident with the caption ‘VAR’.

It isn’t the first time, and probably won’t be the last, that Leeds have felt short changed by a decision this season.

As it happens, had Xhaka been subsequently shown a red card, it probably would not have had too much of an impact on the outcome of the match.

Although, even with 11 men, when Raphinha made it 3-1, Arsenal looked as though they were on the ropes to some degree.

If there was more experience in the Leeds team, and on the bench, then life wouldn’t have been so easy for the visitors who ultimately closed out the victory with Emile Smith-Rowe’s late goal.
