Leeds United's League Cup record as Whites look for improvement

Leeds United have learned their Carabao Cup second round opponents, with Barnsley travelling to Elland Road on the week commencing August 22.

The Whites will be hoping for a cup run, with the League One club intent on causing a shock after beating Middlesbrough at the Riverside in the first round.

Here's a look at how Leeds have fared in the League Cup over the last 10 years...

2012/13 - Quarter-finals

In their run to the quarter-finals, Leeds were drawn at home in every game. The Whites defeated Shrewsbury Town 4-0 in the first round, before cruising to another comfortable 3-0 win over Oxford United a few weeks later.

Leeds then saw off two Premier League outfits, beating Everton 2-1 in the third round, with Southampton thrashed 3-0 at Elland Road in the last 16. The run came to an end when Chelsea ran out 5-1 winners in Yorkshire in the quarter-finals.

It looked like Leeds might pull off another shock when Luciano Becchio put the hosts in front, but the likes of Fernando Torres, Eden Hazard and Juan Mata all got on the scoresheet as Chelsea progressed.

2013/14 - Third round

The Whites failed to have the same sort of League Cup run in the 2013/14 season under Brian McDermott. Leeds came from behind to defeat Chesterfield 2-1 in the first round, before making the short trip to Doncaster in the next round. Goals from Scott Wootton, Michael Smith and Ross McCormack gave Leeds a 3-1 win at the Keepmoat Stadium.

The run came to an end at Premier League opposition in the third round, with Newcastle defeating the Whites 2-0 at St James' Park.

2014/15 - Second round

A second round defeat at Bradford City brought an end to the forgettable Dave Hockaday reign. One of Hockaday's two wins came in the League Cup, with the Whites defeating Accrington Stanley 2-1 in the first round.

Leeds travelled to Valley Parade a few weeks later to face Bradford City, and despite Smith putting the Whites 1-0 up with eight minutes to play, the visitors crumbled with two quickfire goals from Billy Knott and James Hanson knocking Leeds out of the competition. Hockaday was sacked a day later.

2015/16 - First round

This is the only time Leeds have been knocked out of the League Cup in the first round in their history. Yorkshire rivals Doncaster were the team that caused a cup upset to dump Leeds out of the competition.

Lewis Cook gave Doncaster the lead at the Keepmoat, but he was sent off shortly after Andy Williams equalised for the hosts. The Whites missed two of their four penalties in the shootout, and Uwe Rosler's side were knocked out.

2016/17 - Quarter-finals

It was a vast improvement from the previous season, as Leeds made the quarter-finals of the League Cup. The Whites were on the right side of some fine margins on their route to the last eight.

Leeds nearly got knocked out in the first round at Fleetwood Town, but they won 5-4 on penalties. Youngster Tyler Denton scored in the following round in a 1-0 win at Luton Town, and Chris Wood then secured another narrow victory against Blackburn Rovers.

In the last 16, it was another penalty shootout win over Norwich City, which set up a tie at Liverpool, where Garry Monk's side were defeated 2-0.

2017/18 - Fourth round

Leeds made the fourth round under Thomas Christiansen in the 2017/18 campaign. Cult hero Samu Saiz scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Port Vale, and Kemar Roofe also bagged three goals in a 5-1 victory over Newport County in the next round.

The Whites beat Burnley on penalties at Turf Moor in round three, but defeat at Leicester City followed, with Pablo Hernandez scoring in the 3-1 loss.

2018/19 - Second round

Marcelo Bielsa got his first taste of League Cup football when Leeds defeated Bolton Wanderers at Elland Road in round one. However, despite finishing third in the Championship that season, Leeds didn't have a cup run and were knocked out by Preston North End in the second round.

2019/20 - Second round

Eddie Nkeitah scored on his Whites debut as Leeds won 3-0 at Salford City in the first round, but it was another early League Cup exit, with Stoke City winning 5-4 on penalties in the second round after a 2-2 draw in normal time.

2020/21 - Second round

Having been promoted to the Premier League, Leeds entered the competition at the second round stage, and fell at the first hurdle. A 9-8 defeat to Hull City on penalties at Elland Road made it a hat-trick of second round exits for Bielsa.

2021/22 - Fourth round

The fourth round was the best League Cup run Leeds went on under Bielsa. The Whites beat Crewe Alexandra 3-0 in the first round with Jack Harrison scoring a brace.

Leeds then made trips to London in the third and fourth round, beating Fulham on penalties after a goalless draw, before losing to 2-0 to Arsenal at the Emirates.
