Leeds United's goalkeeping situation is precarious despite Illan Meslier's impressive form

Illan Meslier has proved his ability with a string of impressive performances for Leeds United this season. He has missed just a single fixture - the penalty shoot-out defeat in the Carabao Cup to Hull City at the beginning of the campaign.

In the Premier League, Meslier is Leeds' solitary ever-present, and it could be argued one of their most consistent performers.

He has been criticised on occasion for the odd sloppy pass out from the back, but that is precisely what Bielsa desires from his goalkeeper - his faith in the young Frenchman unwavering.

Interestingly, his error which led to the penalty conceded against Spurs last weekend was the only pass he misplaced in the entire game; 38 of his 39 attempted passes reached their target.

Bielsa on Meslier mistakes

In reserve, Leeds have Kiko Casilla, who will likely start against Crawley Town this weekend. The 34-year-old Spaniard courted controversy in the game against Hull, taking the captain's armband in what was a young line-up.

Many supporters felt Casilla should not represent the club at all following his suspension by the FA for the alleged racist abuse he directed towards Jonathan Leko last season.

Casilla was banned for eight games as a result last season, which provided Meslier with the opportunity to lay claim to the first-team gloves. The Frenchman hasn't looked back, and the Spaniard hasn't had a look in.

Across Europe's top five leagues this season, Meslier is performing marginally better than average. Of course, that isn't exactly the most complimentary turn of phrase, but consider this: there will not be many starting goalkeepers in Europe's best domestic divisions this season with fewer than 60 first-team appearances, including just 17 in the top flight.

It is rather difficult to spot the Leeds United badge on the above graphic; it is overlaid by the Fiorentina badge, but Meslier places in the top right-hand quadrant. He is alongside Karl Darlow of Newcastle United, Kasper Schmeichel of Leicester City and Alex McCarthy of Southampton - all 'keepers having good campaigns.

The difference between those clubs and Leeds United though, is that their goalkeeping situation is far less complicated. Newcastle have Darlow and Martin Dubravka, Southampton have McCarthy and Fraser Forster; Kasper Schmeichel has Danny Ward for competition. Casilla is far from a popular figure at Leeds, and has over two years remaining on his bumper contract.

As one of the club's top earners last year, he is far from justifying his wage in the U-23s, and unlikely to replace Meslier in the first team due to on-field concerns and off-field history.

Goalkeeper is a difficult position to recruit for, especially when there is already an undisputed number one. Given Meslier's age, Leeds have a goalkeeper of continental quality who could conceivably play for the next 15 years - that is a difficult sell when bringing in a back-up.

Likewise, teams will know Leeds' stance on Casilla, which somewhat places them over a barrel in negotiations with interested parties.

One thing is certain, the current situation cannot be allowed to play out for the next two-and-a-half years until Casilla's deal expires.

The issue comes to the fore now as this is one of the few weeks of the season in which either goalkeeper could start. If Casilla does feature, it could be one of his last in a Leeds shirt, and the feeling is that few would rue his absence too greatly.
