Leeds United's Elland Road Euro 2020 blow explained as Boris Johnson makes decision

Leeds United will not host a match at Euro 2020, even if the entire competition is relocated to England as Boris Johnson has proposed.

Euro 2020, which was initially scheduled for last summer but was postponed until 2021, was set to be the first to be hosted throughout Europe.

However, UEFA has since expressed its desire for any host stadiums to be able to have fans in the stadiums, which depends on the different Covid responses of the host countries.

There is also the added complication of international travel and the need for teams, players, and staff to quarantine should they travel between countries which makes a multi-country Euros difficult.

Wembley will already be used for seven matches at this year's tournament, including all of England's group games, both semi-finals, and the final.

Other locations include Hampden Park in Glasgow, Dublin, Amsterdam, Bilbao, Bucharest, Budapest, Copenhagen, Munich, Rome, St Petersburg, and Baku and there is no guarantee that travel between the different host cities will be possible, as well as the UEFA's desire to have fans in attendance.

As such, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has proposed that England host the entire tournament. In such an instance, stadiums around England would be used. These would include Old Trafford and the Etihad Stadium, St James' Park, Villa Park, the Emirates Stadium, and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, according to The Sun.

Others would be in contention including Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough, Sunderland's Stadium of Light, and the London Stadium.

Elland Road would usually be included in the list, too. However, Leeds are planning to relay the pitch in the summer.

The Elland Road turf has been a problem all season. Leeds laid down a hybrid pitch as a short-term solution in January, but more extensive work will take place in May at the end of the season.

Leeds head of facilities Mark Broadley said on January 22: “We have been working closely with Hewitt Sportsturf on a proposal to fully reconstruct the Elland Road pitch this summer."

As a result, whether UEFA and the FA agree to Johnson's proposal or not, Elland Road will not be hosting any Euro 2020 games this summer.

A decision on Johnson's announcement will be made in April. Host cities have to provide plans to UEFA by April 5, at which point the governing body will make a decision on how the summer tournament will be produced. The FA, however, are not planning to host the entire competition.

In a statement, the FA announced their hesitance at Johnson's claim, stating that they are focusing on making plans for the seven announced games at Wembley.

"UEFA is committed to holding UEFA EURO 2020 across 12 European cities, according to the schedule agreed last summer. There are no other plans being pursued," a statement read.

"The FA's focus remains on delivering the seven games at Wembley inclusive of both semi-finals and the showpiece final and welcome all efforts being made by the government to ensure as many fans can attend."
