Leeds United's Daniel James welcomes baby boy and plays against Fulham just hours later after helicopter dash

It's been an eventful few weeks for Daniel James.

After a long pursuit, Leeds United finally landed the former Swansea City star for £25m on deadline day this summer, handing him a fresh start after a somewhat mixed spell at bitter rivals Manchester United.

A move from south Wales to Elland Road famously collapsed at the last minute a few months before the move to Old Trafford in 2019, and went down as one of more eventful episodes in the rich history of deadline day.

However, even that incident is unlikely to have been quite as eventful as Tuesday night.

The Wales international was given permission to be with his partner in Manchester for the birth of their son, hours before taking to the field in west London for his side's Carabao Cup clash against Fulham.

"My baby boy was born this afternoon," James told BBC Radio 5 Live after the game at Craven Cottage, which saw Leeds eventually run out 6-5 winners on penalties.

"Thank you to the manager for letting me be in Manchester for that. Absolutely amazing day for me and the Mrs, so proud of her and it was a late one, something we could not change.

"The manager let me do it so I was able to be there for the birth of my baby and come to the game."

With the game kicking off at 7.45pm, there wasn't much time for James to make the game, but Marcelo Bielsa seemed keen on ensuring the winger would be able to play, as he named a strong side that contained just four changes from the draw with Newcastle United last Friday.

It meant James had to resort to extreme measures to make sure he was there in time.

"The car would have been a bit too long so I ended up getting a helicopter," he said. "A bit of an amazing story - and one I will always remember.

"We don't have a name yet and will think of a name when we get home."
