Leeds United's clash with Aston Villa could be postponed as meeting planned

Leeds United's upcoming clash with Aston Villa could be postponed as part of a move from the Premier League to counter the growing Covid-19 threat.

The Whites were one of only eight top-flight clubs to fulfil their fixture this weekend, with Marcelo Bielsa's injury-ravaged side comprehensively beaten by Arsenal on Saturday evening.

Things do not get much easier for Leeds, with a daunting Boxing Day clash at Liverpool and then a home encounter with Aston Villa just two days later on December 28.

However, the Athletic reports Premier League sides will debate the prospect of postponing an entire round of festive fixtures as part of discussions among club chief executives on Monday afternoon.

Clubs are unsurprisingly said to be concerned about the demands of the hectic festive schedule on top of the surge of positive Covid-19 tests which has led to steps such as Chelsea naming two substitute goalkeepers in their draw at Wolves on Sunday.

The same report outlines managers and captains are also scheduled to discuss the 'next steps forward' as the UK grapples with the rise of the Omicron variant.

The round of fixtures said to be identified as being at risk of postponement is Gameweek 20, encompassing fixtures from December 28 to December 30.

Amazon Prime had secured rights to stream all 10 top-flight fixtures on these three days, including Leeds' match with Villa.
