Leeds United's Championship rivals poised to unite in fear of points deductions

Leeds United's Championship rivals are expected to pile the pressure on the EFL to either loosen or scrap their strict ‘profitability and sustainability’ rules this season in order to prevent clubs from sliding into financial turmoil.

Football League owners and chairman are understandably concerned about the financial future of their clubs with broadcast and match day income currently stopped with football on pause due to coronavirus.

Under the current rules, it is claimed that many clubs will face points deductions and transfer embargoes by injecting money needed to fulfil the wages of their playing staff.

Currently, clubs in the Championship can suffer no more than a £39m loss over a three year period before receiving a points deduction.

The laws, once known as ‘financial fair-play’, were introduced to slow the dramatic rise in losses being made by second-tier clubs.

Last season, Birmingham City were docked nine points for failing to meet the guidelines and a host of second division clubs are now fearing that they may suffer the same fate if rules are not lifted.

Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday have also been punished under similar restrictions for the sale of their stadiums.

A report by the Telegraph now claims that 16 of the 24 Championship football clubs could be set to join forces to vote against the EFL in a move that they hope will force change.

That is the number of clubs that would be required to make the EFL act on the matter, the report claims.

Meanwhile, all 24 sides still await news on the future of the league season with the likes of Leeds United and West Brom itching to get back to action as soon as possible.
