Leeds United's 50-year European record under threat from Manchester City

Manchester City are on course to complete the treble this season, with the League Cup already tied up, the Premier League a matter of time and Champions League glory in their sights.

That said, Pep Guardiola's men faltered at the hands of Leeds United twice this campaign, drawing 1-1 at Elland Road before going down 2-1 to two Stuart Dallas strikes at the Etihad Stadium just last month.

The blue half of Manchester could yet have the last laugh though, by snatching a record that Leeds United have jointly-held for over 50 years.

Manchester City are on the cusp of seven successive wins in the Champions League - which would be the most by an English club in Europe's premium club competition.

Leeds United's record of six, shared with Arsenal and Manchester United, is under threat as Guardiola and co take on Paris Saint-Germain in the return leg of their Champions League semi-final this evening.

The Whites however, achieved their place in European footballing history between 1969 and 1970.

Don Revie's side beat Lyn Oslo, Ferencvaros and Standard Liege home and away in six consecutive matches en route to a two-legged semi-final defeat to Celtic during the 1969/70 edition of the European Cup.

An iconic XI made up of: Gary Sprake, Paul Reaney, Paul Madeley, Norman Hunter, Terry Cooper, Jack Charlton, Billy Bremner, Peter Lorimer, Johnny Giles, Mick Jones and Allan Clarke started Leeds' sixth successive win in the competition - a 1-0 victory over Belgian side Standard Liege, courtesy of a 78th minute Giles penalty.

Manchester United's six-game run came in 1965/66 under Sir Matt Busby, while Arsenal's place alongside the two rivals came in 2005 split between their 2004/05 and 2005/06 Champions League campaigns.

Manchester City's place in English football history was already secured with their victory over PSG last time out, going level with the trio that includes Leeds United.

One step further and they will claim the record outright.
