Leeds United regulars drop out as Marcelo Bielsa springs team news surprise for Crystal Palace

Leeds United go up against Crystal Palace at Elland Road this evening, with the hope they can replicate the 2-0 scoreline at this ground earlier in the year.

The Whites defeated Palace on home turf as they began an impressive end-of-season run during the 2020/21 campaign.

However, tonight, that outcome appears much less of a foregone conclusion with Leeds staying out of the relegation zone by the virtue of Burnley's home game with Tottenham Hotspur succumbing to the weather last weekend.

United have just one league victory at home since May as they prepare for this evening's 8:15pm kick-off.

Elsewhere, Marcelo Bielsa saw two Leeds United stalwarts return from injury last night, as Patrick Bamford saw out the full 90 minutes while Luke Ayling played the first half in a 3-2 defeat to Manchester City U23s.

Neither are included in the squad tonight, as their recovery is carefully managed.

Leeds are looking to bounce back from a fortunate 0-0 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend - a scoreline they perhaps did not deserve to earn on the balance of chances.

Bielsa has named the usual suspects in his starting XI this evening: Illan Meslier, Stuart Dallas, Liam Cooper, Diego Llorente and Kalvin Phillips all make the line-up, while Raphinha retains his place having made a return from illness on the south coast.

Daniel James led the line at Brighton and may well do once more this evening as he too is named in the XI.

Rodrigo drops out, somewhat unexpectedly, with Tyler Roberts taking his place. The Spaniard has been something of a regular under Bielsa whenever fit, deputising for Bamford for large parts this season.

Jack Harrison also starts on the bench with Mateusz Klich parachuted into the starting line-up.

Junior Firpo was substituted at half-time on Saturday night, struggling with the pace and direct approach of Seagulls' wing-back Tariq Lamptey. He drops to the bench this evening, with Pascal Struijk returning from the start.

Given the fact Palace have conceded ten goals from set-plays this season, supporters will be hoping Struijk's considerable physical advantages can assist the team in profiting at dead ball situations.

Leeds United XI: Meslier; Dallas, Llorente, Cooper, Struijk; Phillips, Forshaw, Klich; Raphinha, Roberts, James

Subs: Klaesson, Cresswell, Rodrigo, Gelhardt, Summerville, Shackleton, Firpo, Jenkins, Harrison
