Leeds United receive pre-match wind-up as Brighton legend warns of 'second season syndrome'

Brighton & Hove Albion legend Garry Nelson has warned Leeds United that they could suffer with "second season syndrome" in the 2021/22 campaign.

The Whites have exceeded all expectations in their first season back in the Premier League for over 16 years.

Under Marcelo Bielsa's tutelage, his team have showcased their attacking talent as well as the Argentine coach's unique style of play.

There have been plenty of plaudits for the attacking philosophy that has seen them score more goals than 11 teams in the top-flight.

However, as observed in the past with the likes of Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United most recently, teams can suffer in their second campaign in the English top-flight.

That's something that Brighton great Nelson has warned Bielsa over as the club prepare for their second season in the Premier League.

Speaking to BBC Radio Sussex, as quoted by Inside Futbol, the former Seagulls man said: "Leeds are a handful. Their energy levels are unbelievable.

“They always look like they are going to create chances, but they give up chances too.

“So, you never quite know with that one, how that is going to go.

“They are a swarmy side, it is one of those difficult games that you know you are going in for a [difficult challenge], switch off for a minute and then they will be off.

“But, will they suffer from second season syndrome next season, Leeds, who knows?“

The Whites travel down to the south coast this weekend to face Brighton, who are still looking to cement their place in the division for next season.

When the two sides went head-to-head at Elland Road in the reverse fixture in January, Neal Maupay netted the only goal of the game as the Seagulls secured maximum points in Yorkshire.
