Leeds United reaction as £8 million sports hub next to Elland Road given go ahead

Work is set to begin on a world class sports hub that will allow thousands of Leeds United fans both young and old to play football in the shadow of Elland Road.

The proposals for the £8 million Parklife project were first announced last year, but planning permission has been granted today (Wednesday).

It means four floodlit football pitches will be built alongside a pavilion, a community café, meeting rooms, a gym, a GP surgery and a car park with more than 100 spaces.

Leeds United have pledged some of their own money to build an air dome over one of the 3G pitches. The squad will use this as a secondary training base, alongside their Thorp Arch headquarters.

A dedicated coach bay will also be built for the first-team squad to use on matchdays and also when they train at Fullerton Park.

Leeds United managing director Angus Kinnear has described it as a "vital step" in bringing the club even closer to the fans - and the work could even be finished as early as next summer.

The project is expected to cost roughly £8 million in total, with 60 per cent of this figure coming from the Football Foundation's Parklife project. The council will contribute the remaining £3.2 million.

A brand new state-of-the-art TV compound built on-site, while a covered pedestrian walkway will take away fans directly into the stadium from the coach park at the back of Elland Road.

There are currently only 11 floodlit all-weather sports pitches in Leeds, but the Fullerton Park scheme will transform facilities for local residents in south Leeds.

There will be a full-size pitch, a nine-a-side pitch and two five-a-side pitches built overlooking the John Charles stand at Elland Road.

Kinnear said: "The development in partnership with Leeds City Council and the Football Foundation will see a world-class community sports hub being delivered for the people of Beeston, Holbeck and Cottingley.

"This will be the first vital step in bringing the Academy back to the heart of Leeds, creating a talent development pathway for inner-city youth, building the foundations for a better Leeds United in the long term."

The Fullerton Park venture marks the start of a focus from the club to become more embedded in the city.

Leeds United also have plans to move their training base back into the city from their Thorp Arch base, and they have earmarked the former Matthew Murray school as their preferred choice.

Kinnear has also expressed a desire to increase the capacity of Elland Road to 50,000.
