Leeds United prodigy shares joke with teammate after spectacular strikes as U23s thrash Liverpool

Leeds United prodigy Joe Gelhardt sarcastically thanked Cody Drameh for hurting his back whilst celebrating a goal for the under-23s.

The young Whites romped to a 4-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday and Gelhardt stole the show with two spectacular strikes from long-range.

His first was a stunning effort from just ahead of the halfway line which caught the goalkeeper off his line, and the second was a rocket from distance that flew into the top corner.

Sandwiched between the 19-year-old's strikes were goals from Amari Miller and Pascal Struijk, and Gelhardt has poked fun at teammate Cody Drameh for being too enthusiastic whilst celebrating one of the four goals.

The forward shared a photo on Instagram, showing Drameh leaping on his back underneath text reading 'thanks lad, back's killing'.

Thankfully, the tongue-in-cheek nature of the comment means Gelhardt is unlikely to have actually picked up an injury but it serves as an example of the camaraderie within the under-23s squad.

Led by former Leeds defender Mark Jackson, the side have made an encouraging start to life in the Premier League 2 Division One after winning the division below last season.

Marcelo Bielsa's bench for the draw with Newcastle United was comprised mostly of Jackson's players, although neither Drameh or Gelhardt appeared.

They could, however, feature when the senior squad visit Craven Cottage to face Fulham in the Carabao Cup tomorrow.

Absences have plagued the first-team squad and many of the young prospects with burgeoning reputations at Elland Road could be handed an opportunity to impress on the senior stage.

The under-23s return to action on Friday, hosting Blackburn Rovers at the LNER York Stadium, home of National League North outfit York City.

Their opponents on Friday have not yet picked up a single win in the league this season and sit in 11th, whereas Leeds are fourth after losing just one of their opening five games.
