Leeds United praised by promotion-chasing chairman as Victor Orta transfer contacts highlighted

Here is your Leeds United morning digest for Monday, May 25.

Leeds need to be promoted to keep Marcelo Bielsa - Mills

Danny Mills has said Leeds will need to seal promotion if they’re to keep Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road next season.

The former Leeds and England right-back spoke to Football Insider about how the club can keep the Argentinian, amid interest from clubs across England and Europe.

Bielsa’s current deal as Whites boss ends on June 30, but it’s expected he’ll sign an extension to remain to the end of a potentially-extended Championship campaign.

“Promotion is the key,” Mills said. “That is absolutely vital.

“I have seen rumours that there are other clubs sniffing around him already and looking to tempt him away. Nobody is surprised by that given what he has done and the reputation he had before that was exceptional.

“It is really important for Leeds to get in there, get him tied down and get that sorted. It would at least give the club some sort of stability going forward for next season.

“But Bielsa can change his mind very quickly and that is the only downside.”

Peterborough chairman singles Whites out for praise

Darragh MacAnthony, chairman of Peterborough United, is famous for taking to social media to air his views and the current EFL suspension hasn’t put a stop to that.

He tweeted praise of Leeds and West Bromwich Albion for their reported eagerness for the Championship season to resume in spite of the latest announcement that they’d be promoted on a points-per-game basis if the final nine matches don’t go ahead.

"Both Leeds & WBA know they can win promotion on the field & willing to put their balls so to speak on the line," he tweeted .

"Good for them."

Discussions are ongoing in League One. Peterborough were sixth when the season was suspended, but only three points off second-placed Rotherham United in a tight and wide-open table.

Michael Brown gives insight into Victor Orta’s sizable contact book

Former Leeds midfielder Michael Brown has praised the club’s director of football Victor Orta for the diligent work he does behind the scenes.

Orta, who had formerly worked at Sevilla, Zenit Saint Petersburg and Middlesbrough, joined the backroom staff at Leeds when Andrea Radrizzani became chairman in 2017.

“He’ll have a bookful of people, lists, data on so many people that you’d actually laugh if you saw his little black book," Brown said, in an interview with Football Insider .

“I’ve seen him the odd time with a couple of things going on. They’re doing everything they can, he’s obviously the football side and he’s turning it around.

“It’s obviously that new relationship with Bielsa and I’m sure he’ll want a particular player so it’s his role to go and find these. We’ve seen him in windows previous, there’s been money available, they’ve tried to do deals but they haven’t found the right person so they’ve waited.

“That’s good to see that there’s full belief in everything that they’re doing.”
