Leeds United players set to accept wage cap as Birmingham City ask squad to do similar

Leeds United are close to agreeing a deal with their first-team players over accepting a cap on salaries to offset the financial impact of the coronavirus.

The Athletic report that the Leeds squad are expected to agree to wages being deferred after talks between senior players and club officials Angus Kinnear and Victor Orta.

A meeting was held yesterday to discuss the idea, with clubs struggling to garner income during the suspension of football until April 30 at the earliest.

The news comes after Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani said the coronavirus would prove an economic disaster for football.

He told Gianluca Di Marzio: "A disaster, unfortunately.

"To be competitive, a club like ours loses £8million to £10m every year and nobody wants to keep a business that loses money every year.

"This situation aggravates the budget. Not having five home games, we will lose about £2.5m, which are the only source of revenues since such figures do not come from TV rights.

"This epidemic aggravates this situation, which is already normally complicated."

The news comes after Birmingham City reportedly asked players to take a paycut to protect the club's short-term future.

According to the Telegraph, players earning over £6,000 a week have been asked to accept a 50 per cent deduction in their salary for the next four months.

An email sent to agents reads: "Given the unprecedented circumstances we find ourselves in as a football club, as a business and as a country as a whole, we are reaching out to you in order to request your agreeance to a short-term deduction in wages in order to assist the club to continue to run on a day-to-day basis in the current climate."
