Leeds United players pay classy tribute to Gary Speed with pre-match gesture

The footballing community has mourned the ten-year anniversary of Gary Speed's passing this weekend, with Leeds United leading the tributes.

Speed played 312 times for United between 1988 and 1996, before leaving the club to sign for Everton, going on to represent Newcastle United, Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield United ahead of his retirement as a player.

He then moved into coaching, taking charge of Sheffield United, and then his beloved Wales - a post he held at the time of his death.

Marcelo Bielsa's side take on Brighton and Hove Albion on the south coast this evening.

Leeds United's players were pictured ahead of kick-off donning Gary Speed tribute t-shirts as they completed their warm-ups at the Amex Stadium.

The shirts in question included the hashtag '#It'sOkayToTalk' on the reverse, with a link to men's mental health charity and support group Andy's Man Club.

The Leeds players are also wearing black armbands for the Saturday tea-time match.

Vast swathes of professional footballers past and present have spoken out regarding their own struggles with their mental health in the ten years since Speed's untimely passing at 42.

It is hoped the spotlight which has been shone upon the issue will aid and assist others from taking their own lives in future, opening up the conversation between men.

Andy's Man Club is run by volunteers, having been founded by Luke Ambler after the passing of his brother-in-law Andy Roberts.

The group is described as "a talking group, a place for men to come together in a safe environment to talk about issues and problems they have faced or are currently facing".

Earlier this week, Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas paid tribute to Speed at Elland Road.

“People never know what somebody is really going through and in this case it was too late. It’s really sad and we urge those people to speak out, but it felt really fitting to be here today and fitting to be able to remember Gary in the game on Saturday as well," the club captain said.
