Leeds United players' expectations for football behind closed doors

Empty stadiums will not distract Leeds United from their promotion end goal if and when football does return.

It looks increasingly likely when football returns, it will do so without supporters in the stadium and remain behind closed doors.

Barry Douglas, a veteran of four years in Poland and Turkey with Lech Poznan and Konyasports respectively, is no stranger to vacant grounds.

Speaking to the media from his home, the 30-year-old admitted it will prove a difficult atmosphere when there is none of the energy normally pouring onto the pitch from the terraces.

“I played plenty of games behind closed doors in Poland and Turkey with the fans getting banned,” he said.

“It won’t be a new experience for me, but it’s a difficult atmosphere when there’s no fans because there’s no atmosphere.

“It’s hard, you need that bit of energy to help keep you going and push you on, so it will be a surreal moment if it does come to that.”

However, the Scot looked to reassure fans if and when points are up for grabs with nobody watching, the players will not need any motivating.

“It’s perspective. How you anticipate the game, how you set up for it,” he said.

“Obviously it’s important to have the fans, but if there’s still three points at stake to go towards our end goal then you’re going to treat every game like it’s a cup final with or without fans in the stadium.”
