Leeds United player ratings from frustrating 1-0 loss at Birmingham City

Leeds United slipped out of the Championship's automatic promotion spots with a 1-0 defeat at Birmingham City on Saturday afternoon.

Here's how they rated at St Andrew's.

Leeds United (3-3-1-3)

33 Kiko Casilla - seven

Saved well from the two proper efforts which didn't go in for Birmingham City after Lukas Jutkiewicz steamrollered through the Whites defence and then Che Adams was backed to score his second from inside the box. Adams's goal was a cracking strike. Little blame on Casilla for that. Always there as an extra option for his defenders.

18 Pontus Jansson - six

Had a better time of it in the second half after Adams had cooled off a little bit during the interval, but in the first half the Swede was having a tough time of it with the number nine. One of those who did not look as comfortable as he has done in the usual 4-1-4-1 system.

23 Kalvin Phillips - six

Pushed back into the defensive line after Marcelo Bielsa had decided a defensive midfielder did not work at Elland Road in this reverse fixture. Again, Phillips was steady, but nowhere near the quality of passing we have seen from him in the past. Tackling was good.

6 Liam Cooper © - five

Tough day at the office. Struggled with Adams and Jutkiewicz and his passing was very poor at times. Regularly saw his balls intercepted. Nearly had a repeat of the Billy Sharp incident from three weeks ago too, when the ball was trapped under his foot.

2 Luke Ayling - six

Didn't have a particularly pleasant afternoon against Jacques Maghoma. Committed to attacking forays, but brought little quality to them in the final third.

43 Mateusz Klich - six

Passing was excellent for one spell in the second half, but generally the Pole was smothered by the hosts in a system which left him isolated and regularly surrounded by four or five in blue.

10 Ezgjan Alioski - five

One of those frustrating afternoons from the Macedonian international. Poor and ineffective in attack, and unreliable down the left channel in defence.

11 Tyler Roberts - six

Some small flashes from the Wales forward, but didn't have anywhere near the impact he needs to have in this position on the pitch. Regularly switched with Pablo Hernandez in an effort to get the Spaniard on the ball more.

19 Pablo Hernandez - six

Not the Pablo we know and love. Never stopped trying and visibly tried to drag the team out of their rough performances with his single-minded approach. Didn't click though, unfortunately. Set-pieces were off too.

9 Patrick Bamford - four

Certainly the fans' scapegoat on social media. Hit the post in one attack and in the next Birmingham scored the classic sucker-punch. The woodwork effort was more of a reflex from him than a clear chance, but there are two or three others which frustrated more. Put a fizzing cross over the bar from six yards. Isolated and bullied for much of the game and the evidence is there for Kemar Roofe to return on Tuesday night.

22 Jack Harrison - five

Difficult afternoon for the Manchester City loanee. Never seemed to have a clear run at the right-back nor the chance to deliver for the forwards, Hesitant and slipped over more than once.

Substitutes

1 Bailey Peacock-Farrell

4 Adam Forshaw

7 Kemar Roofe (on for Bamford 70min) - six

Great to see him back and see him running well, in behind the defence, but few chances for him.

15 Stuart Dallas (on for Harrison h/t) - six

Brought more verve to the right flank and played his part in fashioning more chances from that channel, but with little joy.

28 Gaetano Berardi

46 Jamie Shackleton

47 Jack Clarke (on for Klich 70min) - six

Much like last week there was very little impact from the winger, who dribbled, as he always does, but didn't particularly trouble the home defenders.
