Leeds United player ratings as Patrick Bamford answers his critics in style

Leeds United returned to the Championship's automatic promotion places with a 2-0 win at Preston North End on Tuesday night.

Patrick Bamford, after being heavily criticised on Saturday, was the hero of the hour with a stunning brace.

Here's how the players rated.

Leeds United (4-1-4-1)

33 Kiko Casilla - six

Very little to do in the first half and even less in the second after the hosts went down to 10 men. Bailed out Luke Ayling on one occasion after the full-back was caught on the wrong side of Callum Robinson during a Preston North End counter.

2 Luke Ayling - seven

A very solid match for the right-back, who seemed to play inverted at times and drift inside on the underlap rather than the overlap. Either way, he ably supported numerous attacks and helped out Pablo Hernandez down that right flank when his ankle may not have been at its loosest.

18 Pontus Jansson - seven

He was never going to find it too difficult beating Sean Maguire in the air. Did what he needed to and was untroubled. Preston did not support their striker anywhere near enough.

6 Liam Cooper © - seven

Possibly had even less than Jansson to do.

10 Ezgjan Alioski - six

Took a blow to the head after an early challenge from Darnell Fisher and played with a bandage for the majority of the match. Fluffed one good chance in the first half which would have smarted much more had it not been for the second-half onslaught.

23 Kalvin Phillips - eight

Totally nullified the threat of Preston's talisman and captain, Alan Browne, in one of his classic episodes of destruction in the middle of the park.

19 Pablo Hernandez - seven

The impact of his presence alone cannot be understated. What a shot in the arm it was for all concerned to see him starting this match. Not at his shimmering best, but floated around and linked play up where it needed to be.

43 Mateusz Klich - seven

Could have opened the scoring with the best chance of the first half, but his caressed finish was inches wide. A spring in his step again and while Phillips tied up Browne the Pole seemed to have a lot more space to play in.

11 Tyler Roberts - seven

Should have done better with one good opportunity in the first half from a central position on the edge of the box, but didn't hit the shot with enough venom. Enjoyed and exploited the space he was afforded after the red card.

22 Jack Harrison - six

Still not quite the final delivery or impact the team needs to see on a consistent basis. Seemed a useful outlet for Alioski down the left when United began counter attacks.

9 Patrick Bamford - eight

It had to be the number nine after the flak of Saturday. This kind of response was the sign of a proper professional. No sulks or strops, just performance on the pitch. Seemed to more of the same in the first half, but the strike to break the deadlock in the second half was out of the top drawer and evidence of why they splashed the cash last summer. Second goal was simple work around the six-yard box.

Substitutes

1 Bailey Peacock-Farrell

4 Adam Forshaw (on for Roberts 83min) - N/A

Thrown on for fresh legs and solidity in the middle.

7 Kemar Roofe (on for Bamford 90min) - N/A

To get Bamford his standing ovation as much as anything.

15 Stuart Dallas

Gaetano Berardi during the pre-match warm-up. Championship - Swansea City v Leeds United - Tuesday 21st August 2018 - Liberty Stadium (Kevin Barnes/CameraSport)

28 Gaetano Berardi (on for Harrison 77min) - six

Went to left-back 24 hours after his 36-minute outing with the under-23s. No dramas and the match had lost its sting by this point.

46 Jamie Shackleton

48 Jordan Stevens
