Leeds United player ratings after Eddie Nketiah's announces his arrival at Elland Road

Leeds United finally broke down Brentford to win 1-0 at Elland Road on Wednesday night with thanks to loanees Helder Costa and Eddie Nketiah.

Here's how everyone rated out of 10.

Leeds United (4-1-4-1)

13 Kiko Casilla - six

While Brentford regularly looked a threat on the break, the Spaniard was not overly worked. Had to claim a few set-pieces from the sky, but the only save he needed to make he failed to, when Bryan Mbeumo curled the ball onto the post in the first half.

15 Stuart Dallas - eight

Luke Ayling does not walk back into this side at right-back. Dallas looks like the man kicking on more than anyone from last season's level. Starting this season as he finished the last. Marauding forward, popping up centrally and filling in where he is needed as the Whites build their attacks. Sergi Canos died away after the first 30 minutes.

5 Ben White - seven

Set the bar so high at Bristol City we have come to expect this level of calm and composure on a weekly basis. Almost fades into the background with how little fuss he does things. A great sign and gave nothing to Ollie Watkins all evening.

6 Liam Cooper © - seven

Much like White, but a year further on under Marcelo Bielsa. Does everything with minimal fuss and as such ticks away in the background. Brentford's chances were minimal.

10 Ezgjan Alioski - six

The brilliant moments of bizarre brilliance in the final third, but the huge moments of frustration where he overplays and runs into blind alleys. Work rate all night, but just does not look as dependable as his defensive counterparts.

23 Kalvin Phillips - six

Steady all evening. Not called upon to do a lot of work as Brentford's forwards worked in behind him.

19 Pablo Hernandez - six

Not quite the magician's highest level. Did not stop trying to conjure something, but didn't have the keys to unlock the doors tonight.

43 Mateusz Klich - seven

Possibly the best we have seen from the Pole in the league this season. Made far more of an impact in the final third and showed energy to get beyond Patrick Bamford. Just not quite those final balls around the box.

4 Adam Forshaw - seven

Picked up where he left off at Wigan Athletic. Loads of running, interlinking passes and, again, plenty of touches around the box. Looks a mainstay on this evidence.

22 Jack Harrison - five

More like the 2018/19 Harrison than 2019/20 we were waxing lyrical about on Saturday. Overplaying and being run off it too often.

9 Patrick Bamford - seven

Deserves credit for getting into the right positions, but no finish on the end of a few decent deliveries into him. Looked lively and very bullish in some of those 50-50 physical tussles we don't normally see him win. Brentford defence was stoic, to be fair.

Substitutes

1 Illan Meslier

14 Eddie Nketiah (on for Hernandez 77min) - eight

The dream combination. Helder Costa hitting Mach 2 down the right flank before crossing for his league debut tap-in. So quick, so lively, so intelligent. The sort of player you want United to pass to at every opportunity. A matter of time until he starts.

17 Helder Costa (on for Harrison 65min) - eight

Can be credited with changing the game. So much speed and cutting edge down the right. Assist for Nketiah was written in the stars.

28 Gaetano Berardi (on for Dallas 78min) - six

Steady from the Swiss as he replaced Dallas, who looked like he wanted to stay on after receiving treatment in front of the East Stand.

38 Alfie McCalmont

44 Mateusz Bogusz

46 Jamie Shackleton
