Leeds United player ratings as tense Barnsley victory brings Premier League into reach

Leeds United (3-3-1-3)

1 Illan Meslier - seven

Tested more than in recent games and more than he probably expected by the Championship's bottom side. Barnsley had a stranglehold on the game during much of the second period and could have been level, if not more, with their territory and shots on goal. French goalkeeper was not beaten by anything on target.

28 Gaetano Berardi - seven

Drafted in for Kalvin Phillips. At the heart of first-half confusion from the bench, who could not make their mind up where they wanted the Swiss to play. Settled in at left-back after starting on the right of a back three. Not beaten by much. Robust and firm challenges. Passing not always accurate.

2 Luke Ayling - six

Began in the middle of a back three before going out to the right. Nothing like the influence he normally has on a game at right-back. Visibly frustrated more than his team-mates by the formation switches. One of those who failed to get a grip on things in the second half when Barnsley were swarming.

6 Liam Cooper © - seven

Had to make some big blocks in the second half. Should not have needed to. None of them at the races in a very ragged second period.

15 Stuart Dallas - six

Did not cope at all well for the first half of the second period when he was playing as the defensive midfielder. Better wide right, but no quality of note from him in the game.

5 Ben White - six

Did not hit the levels in midfield he managed against Huddersfield Town and eventually got moved back to defence, but even there he was not at his imperious best. Once rattled he did not seem to read things as well in the second half. Missed some simple headers. Seemed a mass of confusion with the changes at the back.

22 Jack Harrison - five

Did not have much of a say on the match. Seemed tasked with patrolling the entire left flank in the first half, but did not contribute much to defence or attack.

43 Mateusz Klich - six

Flashes and decent touches in the first half, but one of those who failed to assert any kind of control after the break.

17 Helder Costa - five

Played in a more attacking role than we have seen for much of the campaign. The odd foray into the final third which promised much. Forced the own goal with pressure. Off early in the second half on a stretcher.

9 Patrick Bamford - six

Very little service to work with. Got in behind competently when the through-balls were on, but nothing to really upset Jack Walton. Failed to hit the target with a good opportunity in the second half.

11 Tyler Roberts - five

Another half-time hooking as he failed to find his role in the game. Seems caught between a rock and a hard place for where to play and how to play when he's out there.

Substitutes

13 Kiko Casilla

3 Barry Douglas

7 Ian Poveda

10 Ezgjan Alioski (on for Costa 49min) - six

Provided the energy when United had the chances to counter in a backs-to-the-wall second half.

19 Pablo Hernandez (on for Roberts h/t) - six

Nothing like the standard he normally sets in a fraught and fragmented second half.

34 Pascal Struijk (on for Harrison 61min) - seven

Took a bit of flak after his cameo at home to Cardiff City in December, but brought solidity and bite to the middle of the park as the defensive midfielder.

46 Jamie Shackleton (on for Hernandez 90+3min) - N/A

48 Jordan Stevens

49 Oliver Casey
