Leeds United player ratings as Brentford defeat delivers hammer blow to automatic promotion hopes

Leeds United (4-1-4-1)

33 Kiko Casilla - six

Made a fine save in the latter stages of the first half from Sergi Canos, but it only delayed the inevitable when Neal Maupay pumped home on the stroke of the break. May have been able to make himself bigger when Canos eventually stole through for the second, but blame has to be apportioned to the players who let him get that far.

2 Luke Ayling - five

Tormented by Canos throughout the first half, but provided a passing option for team-mates as they moved forward at other times. Cut a frustrated figure.

18 Pontus Jansson - five

Instructed to man-mark Maupay and the Frenchman scored before the first half was out. Brentford's prize asset was kept quiet at times by Jansson, but the Swede did not seem suited to the role when his opponent was so much quicker and agile.

6 Liam Cooper © - six

A sight for sore eyes in the backline. Never stopped talking or motivating his team-mates, but one of many who struggled to deal with the pace and agility across the home frontline.

10 Ezgjan Alioski - five

Off with an injury inside 15 minutes.

4 Adam Forshaw -  five

Overrun by the speed and trickery of Ollie Watkins, which was backed up by the control of Romaine Sawyers and Kamohelo Mokotjo further back. Passing did not unlock doors.

19 Pablo Hernandez - five

Another difficult day for one of the players of the season. Set-pieces did not hit their mark and he did not have his usual influence in open play. Looked laboured in spells.

43 Mateusz Klich - six

A little more bounce in the Pole's step and he popped up in more threatening positions than of late. Had a couple of efforts from range, but all of them went wide. Tried to carry the team from defence to attack as the box-to-box midfielder.

11 Tyler Roberts - four

Reaction showed he knew he should have done better when presented with a glorious opportunity to equalise moments after the opener. Lacked conviction or power as the ball rolled wide from a good position inside the box. Brentford did a good job screening their defence and denying space for United's central attackers.

22 Jack Harrison - four

A passenger at times down the left wing. Lacked penetration or threat with his passing.

9 Patrick Bamford - five

Massive penalty shout aside in the first half, Bamford was starved of supply. Ably put himself about, but apart from one lacklustre effort early in the second half, he had little say in this game.

Substitutes

1 Bailey Peacock-Farrell

7 Kemar Roofe (on for Roberts 58min) - five

Again the attacking change of choice, but nothing landing for Roofe, who remains the club's top scorer with 14 league goals.

15 Stuart Dallas (on for Alioski 12min) - six

A man many would have had at left-back before the game kicked off. Excellent energy saw him up and down the left flank throughout. One of those to come away with something to build on.

23 Kalvin Phillips

28 Gaetano Berardi

46 Jamie Shackleton

47 Jack Clarke (on for Jansson 64min) - five

Ineffective from the bench once again. Needs something to stoke that creative fire again.
