Leeds United player ratings as Stoke City comeback falls short after penalty loss

Leeds United (4-1-4-1)

13 Kiko Casilla - six

Cannot be blamed for either of the Stoke City goals in the first half. Not tested a great deal throughout the game otherwise. Almost a passenger in the second period.

28 Gaetano Berardi © - seven

Stood up to the onslaught the visitors brought with them at the start and close of the first half when everyone else was being overrun. Tyrese Campbell must be among the fastest players in the Championship, but Berardi managed it as best he could with his own limited leg speed. Triggered the best chance of the first half with an early tackle on Campbell too.

23 Kalvin Phillips - seven

Predictably far more comfortable in the second period when he moved forward as a defensive midfielder and controlled the second-half response from United, breaking down counters and triggering his own with long-range missiles.

40 Leif Davis - six

As with Salford City two weeks earlier, Davis's height and stature were no match for the experienced target man Sam Vokes, who eased to the near post for the second in the first half. Battled, but couldn't match the threat of Vokes and Tom Ince. Stayed alive to prevent a late Vokes winner.

3 Barry Douglas - six

Expected more quality from one of the senior heads in the backline through the first half. Improved in the second half, but passing was not always there when his team needed it most. One or two communication breakdowns saw him getting tangled up with team-mates too.

38 Alfie McCalmont - four

A proud evening for him and his family on his full United debut, but not his night. Ince was just too fast and too incisive for him to deal with and an early yellow card came forth. He will have better nights.

17 Helder Costa - seven

Rasping first-half piledriver aside, Costa was on the periphery of the game until he headed in at the back post to level the match. Always seems to be on the verge of threatening something and blowing a match apart. When it happens we're going to be on our backs.

44 Mateusz Bogusz - six

Loves a shot from range. An intelligent teenager who was always on the move and asking for the ball. Very confident. The ball didn't always run the way he would have wanted it to and his shooting prematurely ended one or two decent moves.

46 Jamie Shackleton - five

Never stopped asking the question of his markers and kept his head up, but not a half where United were at their best, nor Shackleton.

47 Jack Clarke - four

Anonymous and on the edge of things. Did link-up well before setting up Eddie Nketiah for the best chance of the first half, but nowhere near enough end product for a player in his position attacking the final third.

14 Eddie Nketiah - eight

Goal came through being lively and composed enough to nutmeg Jack Butland before tapping in. Improved as everyone around him did in the second half after feeding on scraps in the first 45. Caused chaos in the Stoke backline as the White surge came. He is always going to be there to finish things off, it's about getting it to him.

Substitutes

30 Kamil Miazek

4 Adam Forshaw (on for McCalmont h/t) - eight

As with the other two you are about to read, the midfielder changed the tide of the match. Brought the nous, passing, vision and tackling his team needed to turn match on its head.

5 Ben White (on for Shackleton h/t) - eight

Still hasn't put a foot wrong. Brought crucial height and physicality to combat Vokes in the air.

Lee Gregory shields the ball from Ben White. Stoke City v Leeds United - Saturday August 24th 2019 - bet365 Stadium (Stephen White/CameraSport)

9 Patrick Bamford

10 Ezgjan Alioski

22 Jack Harrison (on for Clarke h/t) - eight

Just what the team needed off the left flank. Drive, pace and end product. Always kept the right-back guessing.
